In a talent scarce market, talent retention has become an HR imperative. How can HR bring loyalty back into the workplace, and how can technology help?

In this interview, Morne and Alraune explore how the current premium on talent has put HR at the center of the business equation, and how new technologies can help HR fulfill its expanded mandate. “HR has a more important role to play than ever before in the history of an organization. . . When we talk about mapping back the value of people to the organizational outcome–HR sits in the middle of mapping that,” Morne explains. There is a need to “introduce loyalty back into the workplace,” and for new technologies to help. Traditional practices and technologies, such as those related to performance management systems, are falling short.

“The performance management system is where the company is telling you whether you have been naughty or good. It’s like Christmas–you get the coals or your gift,” Alraune shares. Morne underlines that under current systems, the current normal is that employees are “jumping from job to job” and this is coming with a high price tag.

“Companies are spending incredible amounts of money on turnover. $300 billion dollars are being spent retraining employees on the job to replace employees who have left jobs.” Morne and Alraune explore how HR can create an environment that encourages talent to stay. Alraune states, “employees want to be known by [their] employer, so that they feel a part of the company and that the company knows them.” Morne provides an example, “We create loyalty by providing them a road map to success within the organization. You map out the organizational roles and match the employees readiness not only for the current role but the competencies and skills and behaviors [of the employee] — through technology [we can match] the jobs that they aspire to--to the availability of jobs that companies are offering.” With the help of technology Alraune and Morne believe that we get a better understanding of what motivates people and create a welcoming workplace for people to grow and have great lives. Both also share their personal stories of growth—and how they became leaders in their fields.
